THE IMPACT OF PLASTIC ON THE ECOLOGY

Sold cheaply and in all forms, plastic production now stands at 8.3 billion tons and continues to harm our civilization.

79% of the plastic manufactured in the last 70 years has been disposed of in landfills or in our environment (only 9% recycled vs. incinerated).

Scientists from around the world are urgently calling for a halt to its use and manufacture.

With more than 8 million tons discarded in the oceans each year, it is estimated that by 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the oceans.

The oceans now contain about 51 billion micro plastic particles (500 times more than the stars in our galaxy).

LEGISLATION AS A SOLUTION

For several decades in international climate summits, the problem of plastic pollution has been raised by many international organizations and environmental activists.

To regulate this plastic pollution, serious actions are implemented:

  • 1972: creation of the United Nations Environment Program
  • 2016: single-use plastic bags have been banned in France and other European countries and will now have to be certified bio-sourced and compostable
  • 2019 to 2023: single-use plastic objects (e.g. cotton swabs, cutlery, plates, straws, etc.) will be prohibited and must be replaced by sustainable materials
  • 2020: Scandinavian countries impose a tax on supermarkets offering plastic bags.
